The 2011 Chapbook Festival is this Thursday and Friday and we'll be there selling our books and handing our free pamphlets and saying hello. We'll have the latest books by Kathleen Rooney and Corduroy Mtn and whatever we have left of our back stock. Please keep in mind that on Thursday we might be a little late as we're taking an early bus from Boston so if you see our table is empty, trust us, we'll be there. It is March of 2011 which means we'll have been open for business for four years! FOUR YEARS! Lordy. It started with Peter Berghoef getting a haircut. From then and up to our latest batch its been such an incredible ride. We've met so many great folks and made so many pals and comrades. Thanks to everyone who has ever bought a book from us. Thanks for all the support. We're still hungry to keep things weird and unique. More than ever. As Charlie would say: "WINNING!"

When we get back we'll be making some alteration to the website. New layout and a new blog. Nothing fancy. Just a sprucing up. We'll also have some great books by Jac Jemc, Sasha Fletcher, Paige Taggart, Garth Graeper, Jordan Davis, and Travis Brown. Not in that order. We have poetry and magic in pour fingertips, bro.

In the meantime, we offer to you for free a digital chapbook by GG Boss, Carl Annarummo. It is called "So Then Let Me Be Forgotten." He doesn't often share with work with ANYBODY so this is a real treat.

Things are crazy here in the Greying Ghost mansion. We have two (2!) pamphlets waiting to be shipped with every book ya'll order. the first one is a three-piece by Brennen Wysong which will hit you hard enough to warrant an arrest. The second is a poem by Morgan Schuldt called "Becoming Regardless" which we were supposed to put out awhile back but its greatness fried out computer! Like an egg.

This week we are putting the finishing touches on Kathleen Rooney's "After Robinson Has Gone" which (notice the pattern) we were supposed to release last week but I didn't like the covers so I re-did them and damn me if they aren't just the damnedest looking things this side of the Mighty Miss. Both sides, actually. Can't wait to set em out unto the world.

After that we'll have books by Jac Jemc, Sasha Fletcher, Paige Taggart, Garth Graeper, Jordan Davis, Travis Brown, and then on to our 2011-12 crop! There'll also be the next Corduroy Mtn which will be in the form of a box set and will feature fifteen works of incredible poetry and prose by fifteen incredible writers on five folded and assembled pamphlets. There'll also be a mini-chapbook of a few poems by me, Carl, called "The Candied Squadron". I'm only printing about 25 of em. Mostly while I wait for things to dry or arrive in the mail or cook.

Hope everyone is having a blast this December. We sure as hell are. Things are starting to ramp up. The bills are all paid. The palms have been greased with chapbooks and pamphlets. Minds have been severed and reattached to look like some sort of new wave ponytail. Oh wait, that the dream I had last night. Or the ending to the Tron remake. I can't quite remember. So let us begin.

First, just to vent for a second, why don't we get NFL games on Saturday anymore? They don't want to compete with competitive skiing? COPS? TMZ's weekly recap? What gives? I just want one game. It can even be the Lions! How about one less bowl game and one more NFL game. Or maybe just replay a game. Remember those yearly team movies? "For native Clevelanders the journey of the 2002 Browns squad began with a tepid fervor over recent #1 draft pick..." I used to watch those. A lot. Usually in lieu of doing homework.

Now, lets get down to the nitty gritty. Books are moving. We have sold all of our copies of Sam Starkweather's Self Help Poems and are down to a handful of copies of Jackie Clark's Office Work and two handfuls of Joshua Harmon's The Poughkeepsiad.

With all these orders the last few weeks we unfortunately fell a bit behind in getting packages mailed out. But luckily we've gotten back on track. 95% of the orders are in the mail. Just a few remain. Mostly overseas orders. Tony Mancus, we are mailing out your order asap. Our apologies.

In the next couple of weeks we'll be dropping the results of our cabin fever. We'll have Kathleen Rooney's After Robinson Has Gone chapbook as well as a couple of quick jewels: Michael Bernstein's Nanostars and Andrew Borgstrom's Left, As Much As The Hands Will Hold, & A View of The Porch. All three are about to pop out in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

We'll also have a couple of new pamphlets for you. First we have J.A. Tyler's The Furniture is a Couch and a Daughter Called Red Wing and a pamphlet of hefty poetic writs by J. Michael Wahlgren. Two Greying Ghost alums for whom, we'd walk over burning coals to showcase their inventions. Of course, the pamphlets are free and ship with every chapbook order! Check em out:

Its been a busy few days here. We've fallen a bit behind schedule but luckily we put our collective weight on the gas pedal and here we go. First off, the big news is that we have a new book out. Office Work by Jackie Clark. "As much a cursory look within as it is an examination of the simplest surroundings throughout. You'll need to read this come monday, come friday, come hell or high water." In other words, its damn excellent collection of twenty-one writings, stylings, and meditations. Books are printed on high quality linen paper on ultra heavy green pilke paper and hand made collage covers. Each cover is different. And! If you take a photo of yourself reading Office Work at work and post it to our facebook wall, you just might will win some free stuff. Judges will determine winner by using the very complex Awesome Algorithm. I'd explain the algorithm if I had a PhD in physics. Or even a Dr. Pepper. Basically, make yours 1,000x better than mine. Shades optional.

Summation: Jackie Clark's Office Work is now for sale. Its an incredible collection. We're excited. You're excited. Lets all celebrate.

Secondly, we have two new pamphlets that are just sitting here waiting to be stuffed into envelopes along any one of their purchased siblings and mailed out to various points along the globe. The first is You Are On Fired, a poem by Brian Foley. A poem so good, if it were a 7" there'd be no side B just two dynamite side A's and you'd keep flipping it for eternity. The second pamphlets is The Sound by Tyler Dorholt. TD sent us some stuff for Corduroy Mtn #3 and pretty much everything he sent made our teeth chatter and our hair stand on end. considering we here are modified IBM Tandy 1000 computers this us really saying something. Both pamphlets are free with purchase of any Greying Ghost chapbook!

Third, starting next year we'll be publishing stuff besides chapbooks. First we'll be throwing our hat in the black and white comics ring. We're accepting submissions as well as asking folks we know and respect. Our goal is to combine the craftsmanship of our chapbooks with our love for early morning xerox fumes. More info here. We'll also be releasing a series called "CIRCLES /// HOLES" which will be small booklets of collage/ephemera stuff by the same art hack who does all the Greying Ghost covers. These booklets will be limited in size, but extremely tall in power, wide of vision, and narrow of purpose. Why does that dude love circles so damn much?

Kelsey Grammer Was A Closet Typographer, or, Help Us Restore Our Kelsey Letterpress!

This is our letterpress. It is a Kelsey 6x10. My wife found this in the basement of a friend's apartment building. There was an exchange of money and some alcohol to sweeten the deal. Over the last several months i've been fixing it up here and there when time permitted. There's still a bit of rust and some missing parts. I've lied next to it on the floor staring at it and seeing what goes where and how. Seeing how it moves. Sort of like a pervert in the dark corner, but not really. But here's the thing: I want this bad boy to really, really work. The way we see it, we'll need new rollers, a new platen, possibly a new ink disc (if I can fix the deeply rusted parts, some paint, and a few minor pieces here and there. Luckily, the core of it is in really good condition. Its going to take some time and yes, quite a bit of money to fully restore this Kelsey X. Here's where you come in. Or hopefully will come in. If you're knocking. Which I hope you are. Or if not knocking, buzzing. Or ringing. Perhaps, showing signs of intrigue from afar. Whatever applies in these modern ages.

To get this up and running, we'll need new parts which in turn will require cash. To do this, we've lowered the price on a bunch of Greying Ghost books. Roughly half the catalog has lowered by a dollar or two. There are some sweet deals. Lots of great books for a great price and a great cause! Plus with each order you'll get some free pamphlets by some writers we greatly admire, as well as our terrific assortment of ephemera!

In other news, after a wacky halloween weekend we are back at it this week with the release of Jackie Clark's "Office Work" and a couple new pamphlets which will blow your feet through your socks, your legs through your pants, and your upper torso, well,your upper torso will stay as is but, man, your and legs and feet will take a beating, in a good way. Sam Starkweather's Self Help Poems are flying off into the various corners of the earth. Two have been sent to the Czech Republic (two different orders) and one to Tokyo! They are selling quick so if you want one, you better get act fast. Like really fast. Like Flash Gordon on meth fast. Does meth make you fast? I have to be honest, my googling of meth was a bit amateurish. The ten minutes spent googling meth almost made my head explode like that guy from the movie Scanners.

Next in the queue is Jackie Clark's Office Work which will be SICK. And I hate using sick as a positive adjective so that just shows you how excited I am to work on this and get onto shelves and into hands. 122# dark green covers with some collage/text covers. These will be the sickest covers to date. The sickest! But not as sick as Jackie's writing. You should google Jackie Clark. Maybe kick it boolean-style and throw in the word "brilliant"...

Season 6 of The Office on Netflix Instant watch. So far, it seems really forced like all the actors are sick of doing the show. Can anyone else recommend any other great tv shows to watch? Keep in mind I don't have cable.

Billed as "motorcycle surf music" which basically boils down to twangy surf guitar, steady drums, and a whole lot of motorcycle engine revving. Pretty bad ass. Mostly smoked up dirt bikes but there's an occasional hog. All music done by The Hornets. Not to be confused with Gary & The Hornets or the RnB Hornets. Nor the New Orleans Hornets of the NBA. Just a quick reminder that next week we're on the road to Pittsburgh for The Small Press Festival! The taxi will be tough on the spine. Beats the bus now, brother... I digress. Work continues on J. Michael Wahlgren's Credo chapbook this weekend. Covers should be done by Tuesday and assembly will take place later next week. After that we'll have books by Sampson Starkweather, Jackier Clark, and a quick reprint of Peter Berghoef's News Of The Haircut, which was the first book we ever released way back in 2007. Three years. Holy Smoke.

We're gonna try and have these books available by the time we raise a ruckus in Pittsburgh for the Small Press Festival that's taking place there the 25th and 26th of September! We might take in a Steelers game. Or a Pirates game. Or both! Huzzah! We love Pittsburgh. Been there many times and love that city. We might even relocate in a few years. Squirrel Hill! South Side. Get ready for some chapbooks.

In terms of our stock, Jon Cone's Plesyre Barge is down to 2 or 3 copies. Corduroy Mtn. #2 is moving quicker than anticipated. I have about 20 copies left. They are free when you purchase two other Greying Ghost books!

Nate Pritt pamphlets are moving fast as well. People dig that Nate Pritt poetry, as they should. They three poems he lent us for the pamphlet are so hot the postmen have to wear oven mitts when they deliver the packages. Maybe the postmen wear oven mitts anyways. But I don't think that's a coincidence. At all. Also, imagine how much more exciting baseball or boxing would be if the athletes wore oven mitts!

Speaking of ephemera, we've added a bunch of new items to the lot! Cleaned out the cubby hole and brought home old stuff i've found in used books at work. Lots of old photos and postcards and comics and even some pages from a 50's dude magazine about headshrinking orgies. Yup. I am giving that away. That's the kind of guy I am. That's how I roll for my clientele.

Up next in the office, we are working on a podcast where we play some of our favorite songs. Some weeks will have a theme others will just be a mishmash. When I can find a decent mic i'll chat with some folks. The name of the podcast is called "35 Minutes Of...." The first podcast will be either be 35 minutes of early Sonic Youth (up to and including Daydream Nation era) or 35 minutes of cover tunes (by the likes of Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers, etc). Will try and get that up tomorrow night.

In book news, We're taking a bit of a break to catch out breath and then we hit it hard again with J Wahlgren's Credo and Self Help Poems by Sampson Starkweather in August.

Did everybody have a fantastic 4th? We sure as shit did! Grilled steaks. Outdoor dinner. A few beers. Hanging out with the landlord's and their pups. Fireworks. Making books. Especially Making books.

This summer we've been busy. We'd fallen behind schedule with the move and all. So this summer's been a non-stop joyride through a ton of books. Right now we're putting Corduroy Mtn #2 together. The cover is legit. Pages are spitting out of the laserbeast. Next in line will be Credo by Sir J.M. it seems weird to be back in the small town of Salem after being in Manhattan but i am here nonetheless in all its weirdness. the chapbook festival was a terrific experience and overall, one hell of a success. it was great to meet everybody and put names to faces, faces to names. it was great and inspiring to see the fruits of everyone's hard work. there are some really amazing presses out there who are doing really amazing things. definitely kicked me in the ass to raise my own game.

mostly though, it was great to talk shop with everyone. people were friendly. i'd saved up a pocket full of green and boy did i ever throw it at folks. came home with two handfuls of train reading. can't wait until the next one.

the next one being the small press festival in pittsburgh in september. then maybe AWP in DC. god damn. this rules.

in book news, the cover paper arrived for the SVALINA/COHEN chap. it'll be burgandy. with a printed wrap. also working on J.A. TYLER'S "Our Us & We" chap and the second print issue of CORDUROY MTN will be hitting the printer shortly.

Love's Michigander: a mesmerizing jaunt, a leering sashay through the restaurant called Prose. just an unbelievable piece of writing. was going to be a pamphlet but turned it into a chap. will come in three different colored covers: gray, dark brown, and tan metallic. i am just waiting for the ink to dry on the covers and they'll be up online. stay tuned.

i'm also about to print up a long poems i wrote called Wells! it'll be a free pamphlet that gets mailed with orders. just editing it down a bit. printing them on tuesday afternoon!

starting today all book orders will come with a mini folded pamphlet poem by jon cone (CULLINGS, fr his chapbook PLESYRE BARGE)!!! i just printed out the test piece and it came out super! it's an 8.5 x 11 sheet folded down to 5.5 x 4! with a hand stamped cover!

every order, either for a new title or old, will come with this poem, as well as our infamous assortment of ephemera!

The Bowling should be completed this week. waiting for the envelopes to arrive in the mail. once they're stamped and filled with books, and sent to the authors, they'll be up on the site.

Michigander by B.J. Love will also be done this week. its a mini chapbook of a [i like to think] legendary dream. four pages. intense!

The other two come back from the printer early next week. This un-related triptych will be immense. Hold on to your hats.

Sasha Fletcher's pamphlet ""We Are All Of Us Up To Something" is going to have a second run which will lead up to B.J. Love's "Michaigander" in the early spring! Sasha's pamphlet is free with the purchase of any Greying Ghost book! That, frankly, smells like quite a deal. Or just franks.

We have a SCHEDULE of releases! Check it out, plan accordingly. We've been blessed to have such terrific and inspiring authors on board. Like a passing of a torch? Yes. A torch of insanely great writing.

I am publishing my own chapbook of poems. I have no bones about self-publishing. The funny part is that I kept sending the manuscript to myself and i'd read it and reject it. Then i made some revisions and again it got rejected. Then i sent myself a new collection and that one i picked up.

We'll have a newly designed website up before the spring festivities. Hopefully. Don't quote me on that but do quote me on the "Hopefully."

This will be our third year (!!!) of being a press. It's been a struggle at times but the amount of blood sweat and tears and time i've put into it has been completely worth it. Its been an honor working with each and every talented writer and the next year will only be better. What i lack in typographical skills i hope i make up for with sheer fanaticism.

The Annual Chapbook Festival celebrates the rich history of the chapbook as a work of art as well as the essential place of the contemporary chapbook as a vehicle for alternative poetry projects and for emerging authors and editors. Now in its second year, the festival features a two-day bookfair with chapbook publishers from around the country, workshops on creating, producing and distributing chapbooks, marathon poetry readings, and a closing-night PSA Chapbook Fellowship reading. all Greying Ghost manuscripts have been read and sorted into piles. the next step is to match the Ms with the authors name and contact info. responses should start going out by the end of the week. in the interest of time, the rejections will be a semi-form letter. people have been waiting for responses for long while so i will try and get them out asap. in lieu of the form rejections, i will give folks who ask for one, a detailed explanation in a second email when time allows. people put in a lot of hard work. i owe them that.

i'd like to also thank everyone who submitted their work. much of it was really a joy to read. can't wait to see who wrote what and maybe meet some new players. again, everyone should have a response in 7-10 days. for all ya'll who sent stuff back in september, thank you for your patience.

this is the last week to submit your manuscripts to the Greying Ghost for possible publication in 2010. you can view our complete submission guidelines . here's a snippet:

we will be reading manuscripts from 9/1/2009 until 12/15/2010. after the first of the year, we will begin the process of choosing 8-10 complete manuscripts (20-25 pages) to be published sometime in 2010. we will also choose 3-5 shorter length manuscripts (10-15 pages) for our smaller pamphlet series. we would prefer to have all submissions be sent electronically via email as an attached .pdf file, but will make exceptions. send your writing to The Greying Ghost Email. all submissions will be read blindly, meaning that our "intern" will print up two copies, one with your name, and one without. we will only read the nameless MS. all paper will be enthusiastically recycled.

this week we're finishing andrew terhune's chapbook. just finished folding and trimming 500+ pages individually with a cat in my lap and pumpkin whoopie pie crumbs in my stubble. the covers will be a mixture of stamp and collage art. should be ready by next weekend. after that we're finishing up kristen orser's book and sending the browning/shimoda "bowling" chap to the printer. The Bowling will be printed off site to save time but a local print shop here in salem. more details forthcoming. also this weekend, we'll be putting up a pre-order link to shane jones' "hairy hands" chapbook. this will be your last chance to be unfolded by hairy hands so if you miss this last opportunity, you will continue to sleep in knots or at the very least, recline in a folded fetal position. i might even add this sooner to offset the printer costs. also keep in mind that there's only a few short weeks left for you to submit your manuscripts to the Greying Ghost for 2010 publication. better get it in before the world is destroyed by the mayans or whatever. john cusack as an action hero? nope.

huzzah! at last, internet access is mine. laptop is now fixed which means i can take advantage of the wifi-ness of salem. mostly, i've grown quite fond of this place and the derby wharf lighthouse. the later of which you can sit and watch inebriated people on boats try and find the marblehead docks. it is also a grand reading spot. so far, only a few awkward goth lads. the fifth annual pagan touch football benefit was a hoot.

another funny/somewhat frightening common occurrence is when our cat, who is mostly black, sits in one of the window, she draws a lot of oohs and ahhs from the locals as they walk by. if she ever went outside she'd be snatched up in a pillowcase and stoned. like, with rocks, not hallucinogens.

the office has done been moved. while there's no desk yet and everything is still in boxes and spread out on the floor (so i guess i do have a desk) Greying Ghost is back in operation! all orders will be shipped either today or tomorrow. thanks for everyone's patience.

since we don't yet have internet at home, corduroy mtn will be put on hold. i'll be reading whatever has been sent in the next few days and anything accepted for publication on the website will be up at a later date. i probably won't be getting internet for a little while as i'm going to really hunker down these next few months and the ball rolling on book production again. a few things have already been formatted and a few other things have been proofed and a few other things need some revisions...so i'll be catching up on that end first.

sorry if this sounds rushed, i am at the library and i have 7 minutes of internet time left. after which i'll probably just end up walking down the various alleys and poking my head into the hundreds of witch shops here in salem. this town is amazing. if you haven't been yet, i highly recommend Derby Square Books. it is a little slice of slickened heaven.
