update #12282010

Hope everyone is having a blast this December. We sure as hell are. Things are starting to ramp up. The bills are all paid. The palms have been greased with chapbooks and pamphlets. Minds have been severed and reattached to look like some sort of new wave ponytail. Oh wait, that the dream I had last night. Or the ending to the Tron remake. I can't quite remember. So let us begin.

First, just to vent for a second, why don't we get NFL games on Saturday anymore? They don't want to compete with competitive skiing? COPS? TMZ's weekly recap? What gives? I just want one game. It can even be the Lions! How about one less bowl game and one more NFL game. Or maybe just replay a game. Remember those yearly team movies? "For native Clevelanders the journey of the 2002 Browns squad began with a tepid fervor over recent #1 draft pick..." I used to watch those. A lot. Usually in lieu of doing homework.

Now, lets get down to the nitty gritty. Books are moving. We have sold all of our copies of Sam Starkweather's Self Help Poems and are down to a handful of copies of Jackie Clark's Office Work and two handfuls of Joshua Harmon's The Poughkeepsiad.

With all these orders the last few weeks we unfortunately fell a bit behind in getting packages mailed out. But luckily we've gotten back on track. 95% of the orders are in the mail. Just a few remain. Mostly overseas orders. Tony Mancus, we are mailing out your order asap. Our apologies.

In the next couple of weeks we'll be dropping the results of our cabin fever. We'll have Kathleen Rooney's After Robinson Has Gone chapbook as well as a couple of quick jewels: Michael Bernstein's Nanostars and Andrew Borgstrom's Left, As Much As The Hands Will Hold, & A View of The Porch. All three are about to pop out in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

We'll also have a couple of new pamphlets for you. First we have J.A. Tyler's The Furniture is a Couch and a Daughter Called Red Wing and a pamphlet of hefty poetic writs by J. Michael Wahlgren. Two Greying Ghost alums for whom, we'd walk over burning coals to showcase their inventions. Of course, the pamphlets are free and ship with every chapbook order! Check em out:

New favorite expression: "Well, that's nothing to shake a stick at!"
Who shakes sticks at things? Especially when they like something?

I just spent 20mins googling that phrase and came away satisfactorily befuddled.

Hey you DC kids, we'll be taking part in this marathon of awesomeness: Barrelhouse's Table-X party! Don't worry, it won't be x-rated. We aren't invited to too many parties. I hope we bring enough egg salad for everyone. I'll also have my finest flannel shirt dry cleaned. Greying Ghost readers to be determined. Inquire within.

Our itunes riser of the week: "Headed For the Texas Border" by those lovable 70's skamps the Flamin' Groovies

Finally, we're slowly responding to everyone's manuscript submissions. The process is taking some time but we're giving everyone's MS a fair evaluative response. Just trying to say a sentence or two. What we liked and didn't like. I will say that the 2011-2012 season is looking to be immense.

As always you can stay up to date with our shenanigans by joining us on facebook. And you can always check out our books and pamphlets and gifts at Greying Ghost Dot Com.

don't forget we're also looking for comics and illustrations. | info

we're nearly sold out of Sam Starkweather's Self Help Poems. less than a handful left. like maybe a handful if you're a Simpsons' character. or a war vet. or grizzly shop-ed teacher. either way you slice it or hack it, we're about to sell out. and trust me, this book is 2 LEGIT. 2 LEGIT 2 QUIT.

also in the next couple of weeks we'll be unrolling Josh Harmon's and Kathleen Rooney's chapbooks. so save up your deuces, wampum, and bones.

the organ sound in this song is incredible. like a precursor to Suicide's Martin Rev if Martin Rev did wedding receptions. and when did jason schwartzman join this band?

UPDATE #110910

Its been a busy few days here. We've fallen a bit behind schedule but luckily we put our collective weight on the gas pedal and here we go. First off, the big news is that we have a new book out. Office Work by Jackie Clark. "As much a cursory look within as it is an examination of the simplest surroundings throughout. You'll need to read this come monday, come friday, come hell or high water." In other words, its damn excellent collection of twenty-one writings, stylings, and meditations. Books are printed on high quality linen paper on ultra heavy green pilke paper and hand made collage covers. Each cover is different. And! If you take a photo of yourself reading Office Work at work and post it to our facebook wall, you just might will win some free stuff. Judges will determine winner by using the very complex Awesome Algorithm. I'd explain the algorithm if I had a PhD in physics. Or even a Dr. Pepper. Basically, make yours 1,000x better than mine. Shades optional.

Summation: Jackie Clark's Office Work is now for sale. Its an incredible collection. We're excited. You're excited. Lets all celebrate.

Secondly, we have two new pamphlets that are just sitting here waiting to be stuffed into envelopes along any one of their purchased siblings and mailed out to various points along the globe. The first is You Are On Fired, a poem by Brian Foley. A poem so good, if it were a 7" there'd be no side B just two dynamite side A's and you'd keep flipping it for eternity. The second pamphlets is The Sound by Tyler Dorholt. TD sent us some stuff for Corduroy Mtn #3 and pretty much everything he sent made our teeth chatter and our hair stand on end. considering we here are modified IBM Tandy 1000 computers this us really saying something. Both pamphlets are free with purchase of any Greying Ghost chapbook!

Third, starting next year we'll be publishing stuff besides chapbooks. First we'll be throwing our hat in the black and white comics ring. We're accepting submissions as well as asking folks we know and respect. Our goal is to combine the craftsmanship of our chapbooks with our love for early morning xerox fumes. More info here. We'll also be releasing a series called "CIRCLES /// HOLES" which will be small booklets of collage/ephemera stuff by the same art hack who does all the Greying Ghost covers. These booklets will be limited in size, but extremely tall in power, wide of vision, and narrow of purpose. Why does that dude love circles so damn much?

Fourth, we're still working on podcasts. it is down near the bottom of our to-do list, so bear with us. Or bare with us.

Over the next couple of weeks J. Harmon's and K. Rooney's chapbooks hit the printer. The excitement level continues to grow. Thanks again to everyone who has ever bought our books our picked up our pamphlets. Thanks to the authors for letting us work such gifted talent. No, i'm not crying. It's just been raining on my my face.

Kelsey Grammer Was A Closet Typographer, or, Help Us Restore Our Kelsey Letterpress!

This is our letterpress. It is a Kelsey 6x10. My wife found this in the basement of a friend's apartment building. There was an exchange of money and some alcohol to sweeten the deal. Over the last several months i've been fixing it up here and there when time permitted. There's still a bit of rust and some missing parts. I've lied next to it on the floor staring at it and seeing what goes where and how. Seeing how it moves. Sort of like a pervert in the dark corner, but not really. But here's the thing: I want this bad boy to really, really work. The way we see it, we'll need new rollers, a new platen, possibly a new ink disc (if I can fix the deeply rusted parts, some paint, and a few minor pieces here and there. Luckily, the core of it is in really good condition. Its going to take some time and yes, quite a bit of money to fully restore this Kelsey X. Here's where you come in. Or hopefully will come in. If you're knocking. Which I hope you are. Or if not knocking, buzzing. Or ringing. Perhaps, showing signs of intrigue from afar. Whatever applies in these modern ages.

To get this up and running, we'll need new parts which in turn will require cash. To do this, we've lowered the price on a bunch of Greying Ghost books. Roughly half the catalog has lowered by a dollar or two. There are some sweet deals. Lots of great books for a great price and a great cause! Plus with each order you'll get some free pamphlets by some writers we greatly admire, as well as our terrific assortment of ephemera!

visit us at Greying Ghost Press!

In other news, after a wacky halloween weekend we are back at it this week with the release of Jackie Clark's "Office Work" and a couple new pamphlets which will blow your feet through your socks, your legs through your pants, and your upper torso, well, your upper torso will stay as is but, man, your and legs and feet will take a beating, in a good way. Your mind might be blown, too. And maybe your eyeballs. Your heart, maybe, as well. Lungs should be just dandy. But really, you'll just want to be sitting down when you read this stuff. It is all that good. And more.

So help us in our quest to restore our letterpress, build books, and sell books!

All the best,

Sam Starkweather's Self Help Poems are flying off into the various corners of the earth. Two have been sent to the Czech Republic (two different orders) and one to Tokyo! They are selling quick so if you want one, you better get act fast. Like really fast. Like Flash Gordon on meth fast. Does meth make you fast? I have to be honest, my googling of meth was a bit amateurish. The ten minutes spent googling meth almost made my head explode like that guy from the movie Scanners.

Next in the queue is Jackie Clark's Office Work which will be SICK. And I hate using sick as a positive adjective so that just shows you how excited I am to work on this and get onto shelves and into hands. 122# dark green covers with some collage/text covers. These will be the sickest covers to date. The sickest! But not as sick as Jackie's writing. You should google Jackie Clark. Maybe kick it boolean-style and throw in the word "brilliant"...

Season 6 of The Office on Netflix Instant watch. So far, it seems really forced like all the actors are sick of doing the show. Can anyone else recommend any other great tv shows to watch? Keep in mind I don't have cable.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Yeah? Oh Yeah! Greying Ghost is extremely proud to announce the release of Self Help Poems by Sampson Starkweather! This past weekend we unveiled it at the Small Press Festival in Pittsburgh and judging by people's reaction, this one's going to go quick. "You don't so much as read Self Help Poems as much as you absorb it. Each of Starkweather's stringent and cleverly witty inventions seeps in through the window like the smell of freshly cut grass. You'll either die laughing in the light of their simplistic charm or wallop a stranger in its shadows. In a book that tries to find the opposite of midway, there are no compromises." Info | Order $6.50

You wanna touch this.

Also, again, thanks to all in the steel city for attending the festival and thanks to the other vendors for showing off their incredible wares and thanks to the Open Thread gang for putting it all together. Just an awesome weekend all around.

Jon Cone's and Michael Bible's books are sold out.

We've started production on books by Jackie Clark and Joshua Harmon. They'll be dropping in soon.

New package ephemera is being cultivated and curated and chopped up and sent out. New pamphlets. New comics. New everything. Things are going well. Books are getting into folks' hands. Hot damn!

Tickets found in thrift store also in Wheeling. They were good for 30 crossings with "pleasure automobile or motorcycle" on Aetnaville or Bridgeport (OH) bridges. Issues by the State Roads Commission of West Virginia. No date given.

advertisement found in a Wheeling,WV junk store.

From the company wiki: "The chain was founded in 1906 in the Pittsburgh suburb of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, by George Clinton Murphy. Murphy had gotten his start in retail as a manager of a McCrory's store in 1896. Murphy later moved to Detroit, Michigan, to manage several stores there, and then returned to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area to launch his own stores. His namesake chain was founded in 1906. It was one of several large retailers to originate in Pennsylvania."

Just picked this LP up for $4.00 at the Record Exchange! Billed as "motorcycle surf music" which basically boils down to twangy surf guitar, steady drums, and a whole lot of motorcycle engine revving. Pretty bad ass. Mostly smoked up dirt bikes but there's an occasional hog. All music done by The Hornets. Not to be confused with Gary & The Hornets or the RnB Hornets. Nor the New Orleans Hornets of the NBA. Or even Miss Hornee from Wayne's World 2, Verdict: excellent buy.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Just a quick reminder that next week we're on the road to Pittsburgh for The Small Press Festival! The taxi will be tough on the spine. Beats the bus now, brother... I digress. This means that if there's something you got your eye on, you should order it pronto, which is latin for right now. We'll have all orders out by the weekend. And since a lot of our older titles are down to just a handful of copies, they might not make it back from the midwest.

The festival should be a hoot. We'll have our entire catalog (minus the sold out titles of course) on display as well as tote bags, Corduroy Mtn. pillows, free pamphlets and buttons, and a few of our ephemera packages which we'll give out to the first few people who stop by on both days! Also, for those of you who don't want to pay in cash, bring your laptops or iphones and pay with paypal! No waiting for the mail!

Also at the festival, we'll be unveiling Sam Starkweather's Self Help Poems and new pamphlets by Judson Hamilton and yours truly. Come and get em before the internet folks! Or just stop by and say hello. Saturday and Sunday (25th & 26th) 12-5pm.

When we get back we'll have books by Jackie Clark and Michael Bernstein going into production!

Credo by J. Michael Wahlgren

Greying Ghost is proud to announce our newest release!

by J. Michael Wahlgren

"Wahlgren's Credo is a sea of language awash with a ubiquitous couple, Peter and Mckenna. In its lines, both the spoken and poetic word blend together to create a magnificent, tactile argot. Homonyms are juxtaposed without the irony of puns, as in "...plenty of reel in the real world." With a diamond-cutter's precision, Wahlgren facets these poems around myth and natural circumstances. Ultimately, in this collection of 24 poems, the reader is invited to experience Credo's lyrical terminology and take that first "Step into a New Surface." - Andrew Demcak

"More than the poems of hope or belief, what I love in Credo are the poems of resignation, in which, very gently and romantically, the poet shows how words are the only possibilities left to us." - Darcie Dennigan

5.5" x 8" Chapbook with hand-stamped, punch-out collage covers
and inlay paper. Printed in an edition of 75. Click here for images of the cover.
$6.00 free shipping in USA/Canada. Everyone else, add shipping.

Only Seven (7) Left!

"Corduroy Mtn. once again unleashes the beast this time under the cloak of darkness and fog. Wrapped up in a blanket and left on your doorstep after a nine month wait, our second print issue, filled with an array of eclectic luminaries we've come to adore and respect, springs from the basket and attaches itself firmly to your bosom. Will the moon rise? Will the earth give way? Will lava spill on the carpet? Will there be a third issue? We shall never say never. // contributors: jeff alessandrelli, ivy alvarez, eric amling, peter berghoef, jimmy chen, jennifer denrow, sasha fletcher, emily kendal frey, garth graeper, matthew hittinger, judson hamilton, charles lennox, john madera, nate slawson, ben spivey, j.a. tyler, john dermot woods, brennen wysong,

5.5" x 8.5" Chapbook. Printed text and hand-stamped images, brown bag covers with black ink. Printed on high quality linen paper. Music score end paper. Printed in an initial run of 100.

Friday, August 13, 2010

Work continues on J. Michael Wahlgren's Credo chapbook this weekend. Covers should be done by Tuesday and assembly will take place later next week. After that we'll have books by Sampson Starkweather, Jackier Clark, and a quick reprint of Peter Berghoef's News Of The Haircut, which was the first book we ever released way back in 2007. Three years. Holy Smoke.

We're gonna try and have these books available by the time we raise a ruckus in Pittsburgh for the Small Press Festival that's taking place there the 25th and 26th of September! We might take in a Steelers game. Or a Pirates game. Or both! Huzzah! We love Pittsburgh. Been there many times and love that city. We might even relocate in a few years. Squirrel Hill! South Side. Get ready for some chapbooks.

In terms of our stock, Jon Cone's Plesyre Barge is down to 2 or 3 copies. Corduroy Mtn. #2 is moving quicker than anticipated. I have about 20 copies left. They are free when you purchase two other Greying Ghost books!

Nate Pritt pamphlets are moving fast as well. People dig that Nate Pritt poetry, as they should. They three poems he lent us for the pamphlet are so hot the postmen have to wear oven mitts when they deliver the packages. Maybe the postmen wear oven mitts anyways. But I don't think that's a coincidence. At all. Also, imagine how much more exciting baseball or boxing would be if the athletes wore oven mitts!

But I digress.

Back to work.

Pamphlet #6 by Nate Pritts, + More!

In Greying Ghost pamphlet news, Jon Cone's The Cullings and Lydia Copeland's In My Room have all gone out with orders. There are no more left because all of you wonderful folks have lent your support and picked up a bunch of books from us so far this summer! Here's to you! And if you like our pamphlets, or have yet to hold one in your hands, we still have copies of Gregory Sherl's 3 poem pamphlet (to get you (any myself) stoked for his his MLP books!) and... AND!...we have a new one to offer. We have a beautiful 3 poem pamphlet by the terrific Dr. Nate Pritts! They are folded into a triptych with a blue stamped image on the front. These bad boys are free with the purchase of ANY Greying Ghost title! And if you check out our catalog, we have some pretty incredible books at reasonable prices. Any where from $3.00 to $7.00.

Also, the new issue of The Corduroy Mtn. is selling like the hottest of hotcakes. The Mtn. is $7.00 or free with the purchase of two other Greying Ghost books. So theoretically, for under $10.00, you could get two Greying Ghost chapbooks, The Corduroy Mtn., a free Nate Pritts pamphlet, and a bunch of extra ephemera items!
Pardon my French, that's quite a god damned bargain!

Speaking of ephemera, we've added a bunch of new items to the lot! Cleaned out the cubby hole and brought home old stuff i've found in used books at work. Lots of old photos and postcards and comics and even some pages from a 50's dude magazine about headshrinking orgies. Yup. I am giving that away. That's the kind of guy I am. That's how I roll for my clientele.

Up next in the office, we are working on a podcast where we play some of our favorite songs. Some weeks will have a theme others will just be a mishmash. When I can find a decent mic i'll chat with some folks. The name of the podcast is called "35 Minutes Of...." The first podcast will be either be 35 minutes of early Sonic Youth (up to and including Daydream Nation era) or 35 minutes of cover tunes (by the likes of Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers, etc). Will try and get that up tomorrow night.

In book news, We're taking a bit of a break to catch out breath and then we hit it hard again with J Wahlgren's Credo and Self Help Poems by Sampson Starkweather in August.

Up Date

Did everybody have a fantastic 4th? We sure as shit did! Grilled steaks. Outdoor dinner. A few beers. Hanging out with the landlord's and their pups. Fireworks. Making books. Especially Making books.

This summer we've been busy. We'd fallen behind schedule with the move and all. So this summer's been a non-stop joyride through a ton of books. Eric Amling's Nine Live Two-Headed Animals is still hot from the printer's poker. Before that was Sugar Means Yes by Mathias Svalina and Julia Cohen, Our Us & We by J.A. Tyler. Right now we're putting Corduroy Mtn #2 together. The cover is legit. Pages are spitting out of the laserbeast. Next in line will be Credo by Sir J.M. Wahlgren and later books by Sam Starkweather, Jackie Clark, and a quick reprint of Peter Berghoef's News Of The Haircut!

Have you perused our back catalog recently? In the interest of making room for the new books we've lowered the prices on a few older releases. Also, the new Corduroy Mtn will be free for anyone who buys two other Greying Ghost titles! Can I get a hells yes?

What else? Oh. We are also completely out of the Jon Cone "Cullings" pamphlets. The Lydia Copeland pamphlet is likewise running very low. Mostly due to all the folks who've bought books from us the last few months. For those who've rocked our books, we salute you. For those about to, we also salute you. Your support is crucial. Like Crucial Taunt to Wayne Campbell. Or like Garth Algar and red licorice. One of those applies.

Here's a quick list of books that are really close to selling out:

Naturalistless | 8 left in stock
Hank Williams | 6 left in stock
Walden Book | 9 left in stock
Plesyre Barge | 6 left in stock
Gorilla Math | 8 left in stock
No Rainbow | 10 left in stock
Stands As Mediation | 2 left in stock
When I Moved To Nevada | 9 left

Lets find these books a home! All orders come with our unique blend of assorted ephemera and a bunch of free pamphlets. The latest one being three poems by Gregory Sherl who's Mud Luscious book I am awaiting patiently. Much like I did for Sasha Fletcher's MLP book. Hot damn. So much be excited for!

Monday, June 28, 2010

Only Ten of "Hank Williams" Left!

We only have 10 (ten) copies left of Peter Berghoef's Hank Williams pamphlet!

"What does Hank represent? Beats me. Seems more like a drunken retelling of a lost weekend, composed over a honky tonk piano, written by Cormac Mccarthy's Llewelyn Moss. Somewhere in this poem is a pick-up chase and a case of spilled beer over by a pond-side campfire. This is why I love Berghoef's writing."

Only $2.00! That cheaper than an ATM fee!

Chapbook #29

"Lord, how do I do this book justice? I could sling together a few clever word-plays or refer to it as "killer" or a "game-changer" or if I were truly clever enough, a "killer game-changer." But I won't. Simply put, Julia and Mathias are sipping gin on the top of K2 while the rest of us are still at the base huffin' and puffin' the hell out of our lungs. We don't even have our gear on yet! Our Us & We by J.A. Tyler

Greying Ghost Press
Chapbook #28

"There is a formula. The addition of a boy, writ, and held rapt for undivided hours by the winds howling in from the Mtns west of Fort Collins, Colorado. Our Us & We is a tromp through town in a subtracted hearse. Every page packed with enough wonton word-play to make even the headiest of word-slingers blush. No, better yet: there's a job to do. They pay you slightly more than minimum wage to drive the hearse but there's never been any deceased folk to transport until now. And you hit every red light on the way to the burying grounds. You sort of like your job. The sun is just about to set and the town is nearly empty except you, and your copy of Our Us & We."

5.5" x 8.5" Chapbook. hand-stamped text and images,burgundy covers with title wrap.
Printed on high quality cotton paper. Ephemera end paper. Printed in an edition of 100.
